One doesn’t hear a lot about HIV/AIDS these days. There seems to be so much other bad news on the horizon, it’s easy to forget that HIV/AIDS is still with us. Though a cure for this terrible disease seems closer than ever… maybe even within five years… there are many in our community still struggling with it day by day.
Sacramento is fortunate to have many wonderful agencies to support those infected with this disease… CARES, Breaking Barriers, Golden Rule Services, the Sunburst Project, the River City Food Bank, and many more. These agencies provide medical care, testing, education, counseling, prevention services, transportation and food.
The truth is, that agencies such as these don’t get the same level of funding they did fifteen years ago, when HIV/AIDS was more in the public eye. Some of these agencies run on shoestring budgets, just barely managing to keep their doors open. It has been my privilege the last few years to be involved with NorCal AIDS Cycle, a three-hundred and thirty mile bicycle tour around Northern California, which aims to raise fund for these local agencies. 2014 is the Tenth anniversary of the ride, which since its inception, has raised over a million dollars for these worthy agencies.
In 2013 I was invited to be a member of the Board of Directors for NCAC. I have been able to see behind the scenes at the incredible work so many are doing in our community. And, for the fourth year in a row, I have committed to spending four days on the bike, riding every one of those 330 miles, in our efforts to raise a record amount of funds for our beneficiary agencies.
