We have a wonderful array of music planned for Holy Week at Trinity Cathedral this year! All are warmly invited to any of these services as we journey through this most solemn time of the church year.
Sunday, March 24 – Processional of Palms from Easter Park and Passion Sunday
- 9:00 am – Celebration Eucharist with Music sung by the Celebration Choir including “O Sacred Head sore wounded” by David Hurd
- 11:00 am – Choral Eucharist with music sung by the Cathedral Choir including “Christus factus est” by Felice Anerio
- Organ voluntaries: “Festive Trumpet Tune” David German; Choral Prelude on “Herzlich tut mich vorlangen” J.S. Bach.
Tuesday, March 26 at 7:30 pm – The Solemn Office of Tenebrae sung by Resurrexit, including Tenebrae Responsories by Healey Willan, and music by Felice Anerio and Jacob Handl.
Maundy Thursday, March 28 at 7:30 pm – Maundy Thursday Eucharist and footwashing ceremony. Music by the Celebration Choir including “Wash their feet” by Pepper Choplin, and “Let us break bread together.” Organ Voluntary: “Le Banquet Celeste” Olivier Messiaen.
Good Friday, March 29 at 7:30 pm – The Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday. Music sung by the Cathedral Choir including “Hear my prayer” by Stephanie Martin and “Jesu dulcis memoria” plainsong adapted John Graham. Organ Voluntary: “Fantasia on an Old English Tune” C H H Parry.
Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 pm – The Great Vigil of Easter with confirmations. Music by the Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Handbell Ringers, including “Ye choirs of New Jerusalem” by Charles V Stanford, and other music by Andrea Gabrieli, Thomas Morley, and Giuseppe Pitoni.
(note: 2024 is the one-hundredth anniversary of the death of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, so we include his splendid Easter anthem, and his organ prelude on “The Easter Hymn” this weekend.)
Easter Sunday, March 31 – The Feast of the Resurrection
- 9: 00 am – Celebration Eucharist with music by the Celebration Choir including “Garden of Tombs” by David Lantz III.
- 11:00 am – Choral Eucharist with music by the Cathedral Choir including “Ye choirs of New Jerusalem” by Charles V Stanford, and “Alleluia al Vangelo” by Andrea Gabrieli. The hymns will include descants by Harrison Oxley and Paul Halley.
- Organ Voluntaries: “Canzona Ariosa” Andrea Gabrieli; “Prelude on the Easter Hymn” Charles V Stanford; “Hallelujah Chorus” G F Handel, transcribed by F Woods Cunningham.
Easter Brunch will be served following each of our Easter Sunday services!
